Discover the history of Doxato and the main cultural and green spaces in Drama.
09:30
Doxato Memorial
Make your first stop at the memorial, linked to the tragic events that affected the community in 1913. Take a look at the inscriptions and allow a few minutes to put the visit into context; the area is outdoors and normally does not require a ticket.
Reach it on foot from the center if you are staying in Doxato; bring water on hot days.
10:30
Walk through the center of Doxato
Explore the village streets at your own pace and pause in the central area to observe everyday life and the local architecture. The visit is free and well suited to a break in a café, roughly 2–5 EUR for a drink and a snack.
Businesses may have shorter opening hours during the hottest part of the day.
12:00
Transfer and lunch in Drama
Get to Drama by car or taxi in about 20–30 minutes, depending on traffic. For lunch, choose a taverna in the center: budget around 12–22 EUR per person for a simple meal with a drink.
14:00
Archaeological Museum of Drama
Spend about an hour exploring the collections that trace the region’s history from prehistory to the Roman era. Tickets and opening hours may vary by season; budget around 3–8 EUR and check before you go.
16:00
Agia Varvara Park and Byzantine Walls
Stroll through the park among springs, waterways, and greenery, then continue on to the remains of the Byzantine walls, reachable on foot from the center. Allow about two hours in total with stops and photos; access to the outdoor areas is generally free.
The boardwalks can be damp near the water: non-slip shoes are useful.
Explore the archaeological site of Philippi, its museum, and the nearby Baptistery of Lydia.
09:00
Departing from Doxato
Reach Philippi by car in about 35–45 minutes; alternatively, arrange a taxi or private transfer in advance, as local connections can be infrequent. Factor fuel and parking into your day’s budget.
09:45
Archaeological Site of Philippi
Spend at least two hours among the ruins of the ancient city, taking in the theater, the agora, and the remains of public and early Christian buildings. The route is largely outdoors and on uneven surfaces; the combined ticket, if available, may cost around 6–12 EUR.
12:00
Archaeological Museum of Philippi
Deepen your visit with artifacts and materials that help you understand the city’s different periods. Set aside about 45–60 minutes and check opening hours, which may vary; also verify whether admission is included in the site ticket.
13:15
Lunch around Philippi
Stop at a local taverna or bring a snack, especially if you’re visiting outside the busiest months. For a sit-down lunch, budget roughly 12–22 EUR per person; water and picnic items can cost less.
15:00
Baptism of Lydia
Make your way to the baptistery and the memorial area dedicated to Lydia, traditionally associated with the first Christian baptism in Europe. The visit is short and generally free in the outdoor areas; please remain respectful during any religious services.
Visiting Kavala’s main landmarks and enjoying its historic center overlooking the sea.
09:00
Transfer from Doxato to Kavala
Set off by car for Kavala, allowing about 55–70 minutes of travel in normal conditions. Park in the lower part of the city and continue on foot: the streets of the upper town are steep, and some sections have uneven paving.
10:15
Kavala Aqueduct
Take a close look at the monumental aqueduct, known locally as Kamares, and its arches crossing the urban fabric. The exterior visit is free; allow 30–45 minutes for photos and a short walk around the area.
11:00
Kavala Fortress
Head up to the fortress to explore the walls and the viewpoints over the harbor and the city. The visit takes about an hour; admission may be charged, around 4–8 EUR, and opening hours may change with the season.
12:30
Imaret and lunch in the old town
Admire the Imaret from the outside or ask about any available visits, as access may depend on the property management. Have lunch in the upper town or down by the harbor: expect around 15–25 EUR per person, depending on the venue.
