The quarries of Penteli are tied to the white marble used in some of the most famous monuments of ancient Athens. The rocky landscape speaks of a long quarrying tradition that has shaped the history of the area.

DionyssosAttica · Greece
One destination.
A thousand ways to live it.
At the foot of Mount Pentelicus, Dionysos offers a quiet, green side of Attica, far from the pace of the capital yet only a short distance from Athens. The ancient marble quarries, monasteries, and landscapes around invite an itinerary that blends nature and history.
Worth seeing, worth remembering.
The church dedicated to Saint Dionysios the Areopagite is a local religious landmark in the center of Dionysos. It is well worth a stop during a walk through the town’s streets.
Also known as Penteli Monastery, this religious complex stands in a mountain setting among pine trees and green slopes. Its history and peaceful atmosphere make it one of the most captivating visits in the area.
The artificial lake of Marathon is surrounded by hills and offers a pleasant setting for a day trip. Its waters supply Athens, and the area is appreciated for its views and walks.
Built in Pentelic marble, the dam is an impressive 20th-century feat of engineering and a scenic viewpoint over the lake. Its architecture pays tribute to the region’s marble-making tradition.
The museum displays artifacts that tell the long history of the region, from prehistoric times to the Roman period. It is an interesting stop to combine with a visit to the lake and the archaeological sites of Marathon.

How to get around
Dionyssos is a hilly and fairly spread-out area, so having a car is convenient for getting around the neighborhoods and reaching the surroundings. You can also get there from Athens by bus, but connections may require changes and vary depending on your departure point: check the updated schedules before you leave. There is no metro station in town; for the final stretches, taxis or chauffeur-driven transport services can be useful. Some roads are winding and uphill, so drive carefully, especially in the evening.
When to go
Spring and autumn are the most pleasant times to visit the area and go for walks on the Pentelic slopes. In summer the heat can be intense, although the hilly location sometimes offers a bit of relief compared with central Athens; still check the heat conditions and fire risk before setting out on excursions. Winter is cooler and can be rainy, so bring suitable clothing.
Where to eat
In Dionyssos you will find tavernas and Greek food spots, ideal for a relaxed meal away from the pace of central Athens. Look for daily specials, mezedes to share, and grilled specialties; offerings and opening hours can vary from one neighborhood to another. At weekends it is wise to book ahead, especially if you are traveling in a group.
Quick tips
- 01Check bus times in advance: service may be limited, especially in the evening and on public holidays.
- 02If you drive, take the hills and bends into account and check where parking is allowed.
- 03For walks on Mount Pentelicus, bring suitable shoes, water, and sun protection.
- 04In summer, find out about any access restrictions on the trails due to fire risk.
Wake up in the right place.
