The museum displays finds unearthed in the archaeological area, including statues, votive offerings and mosaics. It is an ideal stop to better understand the history of the city and its sanctuaries.

This sanctuary was the main place of worship in Dion and bears witness to the city's connection with Zeus and Mount Olympus. Among the visible structures, the remains of altars and temples stand out.

Dedicated to the Egyptian goddess assimilated into Greek worship, the sanctuary preserves the remains of sacred buildings and spaces linked to rituals. Its location near the water adds to the site's evocative atmosphere.

The ancient theatre, built at the foot of Mount Olympus, recalls the city's role in public life and celebrations. A visit allows you to imagine the performances that animated Dion in ancient times.

BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

Getting around

The archaeological site and museum are located in the village of Dion, at the foot of Mount Olympus. A car offers the greatest flexibility; from Katerini you can reach the area by following the signs for Dion, while from Litochoro you can get there by car or by local connections, depending on the season. To visit the excavations, be prepared to walk on paths and uneven surfaces: comfortable shoes are essential. To explore the trails of Olympus, consider Dion and Litochoro as separate starting points and check the trail conditions.

When to go

Spring and early autumn are pleasant times to visit the excavations and stroll around the area, with generally milder temperatures. In summer, the heat can be intense and shade limited: it is best to arrive in the morning, bring water and sunscreen. Before your visit, check the updated opening hours of the site and museum, which may vary throughout the year.

Where to eat

In the village of Dion and the surrounding area you will find tavernas and restaurants serving Greek cuisine, often based on meat, vegetables, cheese, and local products. For a wider choice, Litochoro offers several alternatives and is a convenient stop before or after a visit to Olympus. Hours may be reduced outside the high season: check opening times in advance, especially if you are traveling in the low season.

Quick tips

  1. Set aside time for both the archaeological site and the museum: the visits complement each other.
  2. Bring water, a hat, and suitable shoes; the excavation area is large and partly exposed to the sun.
  3. Before you leave, check opening times, any closures, and local connections, as they may change depending on the season.
  4. If you plan to hike on Olympus, check the weather and trail conditions and do not confuse a visit to Dion with a mountain route.
