The city takes shape.
Stop after stop.
A well-planned trip.
Getting around
The metro is affordable and extensive, but it can get very crowded during rush hour: if possible, avoid the busiest trips in the morning and late afternoon. Metrobús and buses cover other areas; to use them, you generally need the Tarjeta de Movilidad Integrada, which can be bought and topped up at stations. For short distances, explore neighborhoods like Roma, Condesa, and Centro Histórico on foot, watching the traffic and crossing at crosswalks. App-based taxis are a convenient alternative, especially at night; allow extra time because traffic jams are common. The city sits at more than 2,200 meters above sea level, so give yourself time to acclimate, especially after arrival.
When to go
The months from November to April are generally the driest and most pleasant for visiting the city. From May to October, rain is more frequent, often in the afternoon, but it rarely gets in the way of planning your day: bring a light rain jacket. In spring the weather can be hot and dry; book ahead if you are traveling during holidays or peak season.
Where to eat
To taste the local cuisine, look for taquerías and markets, where you can find tacos, tamales, and antojitos made fresh to order. Roma, Condesa, and Polanco offer restaurants at every price point, while Centro Histórico has traditional spots and long-established addresses. Choose busy places and make sure the food is well cooked; if you have a sensitive stomach, ask for bottled water and be careful with ice and raw vegetables.
Quick tips
- 01Bring a light jacket with you: temperatures can change during the day, and it cools down in the evening.
- 02Drink water regularly and keep a relaxed pace in your first few days to adjust to the altitude.
- 03Keep documents and valuables safe, especially on crowded transport and in tourist areas.
- 04Check air quality and any local alerts, especially if you have respiratory problems.
