THE PLACES THAT TELL CHICHÉN ITZÁ

Worth seeing, worth remembering.

El Castillo (Temple of Kukulkán)

(Temple of Kukulkán)

The most iconic pyramid at Chichén Itzá was dedicated to the feathered serpent god Kukulkán. Its architecture is tied to astronomical cycles and, at the equinoxes, the light creates the illusion of a serpent descending the staircase.

Great Ball Court

It is the largest known Mesoamerican ball court. The walls, stone rings, and reliefs make it easy to imagine the solemnity of the ritual competitions.

Temple of the Warriors

A vast ceremonial complex featuring carved columns and the figure of the Chac Mool at the top. Nearby is the Thousand Columns Group, which once supported a large roofed structure.

Sacred Cenote

Sacred Cenote

This large natural sinkhole played an important role in the city’s rituals and offerings. Its evocative landscape is a reminder of how precious cenotes were to the communities of the Yucatán Peninsula.

El Caracol (Observatory)

(Observatory)

This distinctive circular tower is traditionally interpreted as an astronomical observatory. Its openings and unusual structure bear witness to the Maya’s interest in celestial movements.

This complex of buildings features richly decorated facades with motifs and figures from the Maya tradition. The Spanish name, “the nuns,” was given by the conquistadors and does not reflect the complex’s original purpose.

BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

How to get around

Chichén Itzá can be reached by car, on an organized excursion, or by bus from places such as Valladolid and Mérida; check opening times and availability in advance, as they may vary. Once you arrive, the complex is explored on foot along marked paths and trails. The distances are considerable and there is little shade, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water. To avoid the hottest weather and the biggest crowds, go in as soon as it opens.

When to go

The generally driest period runs from November to April, while from May to October heat and humidity, along with rain, are more common. In any season, it is best to visit the site early in the morning. On the days of the spring and autumn equinoxes, visitor numbers can be especially high: if you want to avoid the crowds, choose another date.

Where to eat

In the nearby village of Písté you’ll find restaurants and small eateries, often convenient for a meal before or after your visit. Some hotels in the area also serve Yucatecan cuisine and Mexican dishes. Dining options inside the complex are limited, so plan ahead and check the latest rules on bringing in food and drinks.

Quick tips

  1. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and water: the sun is strong and shade is scarce.
  2. Before you leave, check updated opening hours, entry rules, and prices on official channels.
  3. Allow plenty of time for your visit and do not climb on the monuments: access to the structures is regulated.
  4. If you are traveling by bus or on an excursion, be sure to confirm the return times and the meeting point.
