Guide to Chalki
CHALKI · ITINERARY

Chalki (Rhodes, South Aegean, Greece) in 3 days – Complete itinerary

3 days / 2 nights · Port, beaches, history, inland

Chalki is a small island in the Dodecanese, ideal to explore at a leisurely pace with short transfers, but with an inland area that requires a bit of planning. The first day is devoted to Nimborio, its monuments, and the most convenient beach to reach from the village. The second alternates between two swimming bays, while the third leads to the remains of the old settlement of Chorio and the Monastery of Saint John Alargas. Distances and times are indicative: for ferries, any transfers, and access to religious sites, it is worth checking updated information before departure.

Day 1 – Nimborio, architecture and a first swim

10:00–20:00 Easy walks and a beach break

Get your bearings in the main port, visit its points of interest, and finish with a swim at Pondamos.

10:00

Nimborio and the waterfront

Spend about an hour in the port, following the waterfront past the pale-colored houses, boats, and cafés overlooking the bay. It’s an area to explore on foot; breakfast or a coffee can typically cost around 4–8 €.

If you arrive by ferry in the morning, leave your luggage at your accommodation before setting out, if possible.

11:15

Church of Agios Nikolaos

Reach the church with a short walk from the port and take in the facade, bell tower, and decorative details typical of local religious architecture. Allow about 30–45 minutes; access inside depends on the conditions of the site and should not be assumed.

For visits and access, check any local notices or official information.

12:15

Clock Tower

Continue on foot through the heart of Nimborio to the tower, a landmark visible in the village skyline. Stop for photos and to observe the compact pattern of the surrounding lanes; allow 20–30 minutes and no entrance fee unless otherwise indicated on site.

The lanes can be uneven: wear comfortable shoes.

16:00

Pondamos Beach

After a lunch break in Nimborio, reach Pondamos on foot in about 20–30 minutes, following the local path south; alternatively, ask locally about any available crossings. Spend the afternoon swimming and relaxing, bringing water and sunscreen; the beach may be free, while sunbeds and an umbrella, if available, may cost around 10–25 € per pair.

Plan to walk back before sunset and check the trail conditions.

Day 2 – Two bays and a day by the sea

10:00–18:30 Beach time, with short transfers

Enjoying two different beaches without packing too many transfers into the same day.

10:00

Ftenagia Beach

From Nimborio, reach Ftenagia on foot in about 15–25 minutes, following the coast and taking care on sun-exposed stretches. The bay is ideal for a few hours of swimming and admiring the rocky scenery; bring water and budget around 5–15 € for drinks or small supplies, if available locally.

Check locally for any services and route conditions before setting off.

14:30

Kania Beach

After a lunch break, head toward Kania: distances on the island are not long, but the route can be uncomfortable on foot in the heat; arrange a taxi, a rental vehicle, or another local transfer in advance. Allow about two hours for the bay and a swim; lunch at a taverna can cost roughly 15–30 € per person, while any beach services have variable rates.

Do not rely on unconfirmed rides or connections: ask for up-to-date information in Nimborio.

Day 3 – Chorio and the monastery inland

09:30–17:00 Slow exploration, with transfer to be planned

Discover the traces of the ancient settlement and reach the monastery in the most secluded part of the island.

09:30

Ancient village of Chorio

Arrange a transfer from Nimborio to the Chorio area; on foot only if you are fit and have checked the route, heat, and timing in advance. A taxi or rental vehicle makes the excursion more manageable. Allow about 1–2 hours for the remains of the settlement and the view, without entering unstable structures; consider 10–25 € for any short transfer, to be confirmed locally.

Bring closed-toe shoes, water, and a hat: the site is exposed and the terrain can be uneven.

13:00

Monastery of Saint John Alargas

Continue to the monastery with transport arranged in advance: the route crosses a less-served part of the island and it is not wise to assume regular connections. Allow about 45–60 minutes at the site to observe the architecture and surrounding landscape; there is no certain entrance fee, while the overall transfer with waiting time may affect the day's budget.

Check access, road conditions, and any entry rules in advance on the official website or with local contacts before visiting.

Practical tips

  • Check ferry timetables and plan the two nights around the actual arrival and departure dates: the schedule for the first and last day may need to be adjusted.
  • For Chorio and the monastery, arrange round-trip transport in advance, including waiting times and the return pickup point.
  • Bring water, a hat, sunscreen, and suitable shoes: shade and services may be limited outside Nimborio.
  • Before visiting, check any access rules, regulations, and tickets on official sites or with local contacts, without relying on outdated schedules.
