Guide to Chalki
CHALKI · ITINERARY

Chalki (Rhodes, South Aegean, Greece) in 1 day – Complete itinerary

1 day · Port, sea, historic villages, excursion

The itinerary combines the coastal heart of Nimborio with a beach stop at Pondamos and a discovery of the island’s historic interior. The shorter stretches are done on foot, and it’s advisable to arrange the transfer to Chorio in advance so you can save your energy for the climb to the castle. Lunch, water, and rest breaks are included between the stops, with no additional sightseeing added to the route. The final climb is over uneven ground: assess the available light and trail conditions before setting off.

Day 1 – From Nimborio harbor to the historic heights of Chalki

10:00–21:00 Easy walks, with a challenging climb in the afternoon

Get to know Chalki’s harbor and coastline, then head to Chorio and the castle on a well-paced excursion.

10:00

Nimborio (Port)

Spend about an hour at the harbor and its seafront promenade, watching the colorful houses overlooking the bay and the moored boats. It’s the landmark to help you get oriented and plan any transfers: before moving on, ask locally whether a taxi to Chorio is available and arrange your return. The walk is free; budget about 3–8 € for a drink or snack.

If you arrive by ferry, check the timetable in advance and plan the day around the return connection.

11:30

Pondamos Beach

Reach the beach on foot from the harbor in about 15–25 minutes, following the coastal road and allowing time for a swim and a break of about an hour and a half. Bring water and sunscreen; the availability of services and facilities may vary. Access to the beach may be free, while for sun loungers or an umbrella you should budget roughly 10–25 € per couple.

With choppy seas or strong sun, reduce your time on the beach and save your energy for the afternoon climb.

14:30

Ancient village of Chorio

After a lunch break of about an hour, head to Chorio: consider a taxi arranged in advance, if available, or a road walk of about 60–90 minutes, to be checked on site depending on the route and the heat. Set aside 45–60 minutes to explore at a relaxed pace the traces of the abandoned village, the stone walls, and the relationship between the settlement and the hilly landscape. The walk does not require a compulsory expense; budget around 10–20 € for a simple meal and check locally for any transport costs.

Do not count on a taxi service unless you have confirmed availability, price, and return time.

16:30

Castle of the Knights

From the village, continue toward the castle along the uphill path: allow at least 60–90 minutes for the walk up, the visit, and the descent, and wear shoes with good grip. At the top, take in the remains of the fortifications and the views over the island; the ground can be rocky and accessibility depends on trail conditions. Do not assume either access or no ticket is required: check any official guidance and allow 0–10 € for possible costs or services. Plan your return to Nimborio with a margin, ideally by 20:30.

Avoid the climb if daylight is fading, the path is slippery, or you do not have enough water with you.

Practical tips

  • Check the ferry times and plan the day so you do not risk missing the return connection.
  • Bring water, a hat, and sunscreen: exposed sections and the climb can be tiring in the hot hours.
  • Confirm local taxi availability on site and agree in advance on the price, meeting point, and time.
  • Before your visit, check the official channels for any updated information on access and conditions on the castle trail.
