One destination.
A thousand ways to live it.
Kalymnos, in the Dodecanese, captivates with its colorful harbor, tranquil bays and mountains diving into the blue. Famous for the sponge-fishing tradition and its climbing routes, the island offers a fascinating mix of culture, sea and adventure.
Worth seeing, worth remembering.
Monastery of Saint Anthony (Agios Savvas)
Perched above , the monastery is an important place of worship and a privileged panoramic spot over the town and the harbor. The climb rewards you with especially striking views at sunset.
Archaeological Museum of Kalymnos
Located in , it houses artifacts that tell the story of the island from antiquity to the Byzantine era. Among the most notable pieces is the bronze statue known as the Lady of Kalymnos.
Castle of Chora (Kastro Choras)
The medieval fortifications dominate the ancient settlement of Chora and preserve traces of churches and homes. From the walls, there is a beautiful view of the coast and the inland area.
Rina Harbor,
At the end of a narrow inlet, the little port of Rina is surrounded by rocky walls and clear waters. It is an ideal spot for a seaside break and for exploring the bay by boat.
This famous cliff near Massouri is one of the iconic places for sport climbing in Kalymnos. Even without climbing the walls, the view over the rocks and the sea is well worth a stop.

How to get around
The main port is in , with ferry connections to Kos and other Dodecanese islands; from there are also links to Piraeus, with frequency varying by season. Kalymnos has a small airport with domestic flights, especially from Athens, but routes can be limited. To explore the island with greater freedom, you can rent a car or scooter, checking the terms and insurance coverage before you set off. Buses serve some destinations, but services and timetables are not always frequent, especially outside peak season. If you’re visiting isolated beaches or cliffs, it’s wise to check the route and road conditions in advance.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are ideal for visiting the island, hiking, and climbing in milder temperatures. Summer is the best season for the sea, but it can be hot and more crowded; in July and August it’s a good idea to book ferries and accommodation in advance. In spring and autumn, it’s advisable to check connection times, as they may be reduced.
Where to eat
In and the coastal villages you’ll find tavernas where you can sample fish and seafood, along with classic Greek dishes. Look for local specialties and island products such as cheese and honey, asking what’s available that day. For a quieter meal, choose a taverna away from the port or stop in a village: opening hours and schedules can vary outside summer.
Quick tips
- 01If you’re arriving via Kos, check ferry times in advance and leave some extra time between journeys: connections are not always close together.
- 02For hiking and climbing, bring water, sun protection, and suitable shoes; avoid the hottest hours in summer.
- 03Rent a vehicle only if you feel comfortable on local roads, and check the vehicle’s condition carefully before setting off.
- 04Keep some cash on hand for small purchases and less visited places, where card payments may not always be available.
Wake up in the right place.
