It stands on the hill overlooking the old town and offers beautiful views of the city and the gulf. Its origins date back to the Byzantine era, while the fortifications were modified in later centuries.

CalamataPeloponnese · Greece
One destination.
A thousand ways to live it.
Overlooking the Messinian Gulf and surrounded by olive groves, Kalamata combines the laid-back rhythm of the sea with the richness of Greek history. Between the castle, churches and museums in the center, the city offers plenty of opportunities to discover the traditions of the Peloponnese and enjoy the waterfront.
Worth seeing, worth remembering.
It is one of the most recognizable churches in Kalamata, with an imposing façade and a richly decorated interior. It is dedicated to the Presentation of Christ in the Temple and houses a highly venerated icon.
It houses artifacts that tell the story of Messenia from prehistory to the Byzantine era. The collections include ceramics, sculptures and objects from various archaeological sites across the region.
Set in a historic residence, it presents objects, photographs and testimonies of everyday life and local traditions. Its rooms also trace important moments in the city's history.
An open-air park where historic locomotives and carriages tell the region’s railway past. It is also a pleasant stop for a walk among trees, playgrounds and green spaces.
The long city shoreline invites you to stroll along the promenade, relax on the beach and stop at cafés and tavernas overlooking the gulf. On clear days, the view stretches all the way to the Taygetus mountains.

How to get around
The center of Kalamata is easy to explore on foot, especially between the seafront, the port, and the historic center. To reach the more distant beaches or outlying neighborhoods, you can use city buses and taxis. Intercity bus connections leave from the KTEL station and serve several destinations in the Peloponnese. If you want to explore the surroundings, such as Messene or the Mani Peninsula, renting a car offers greater flexibility. In summer, check public transport schedules and frequency in advance.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are ideal for visiting Kalamata: the temperatures are pleasant and you can alternate time in the city with excursions in the surrounding area. Summer is perfect for the sea, but it can be very hot and more crowded, especially in August. Winter is also mild compared with many other European destinations, but some seasonal services may run on reduced schedules.
Where to eat
Look for tavernas and restaurants in the historic center and along the seafront to sample Messinian cuisine and local products. Specialties include Kalamata olives, dishes based on extra virgin olive oil, sfela, and lalagia, traditional fritters often served with honey or cheese. For a casual meal, try meze paired with local wine or ouzo.
Quick tips
- 01Bring comfortable shoes: the historic center has uneven streets, and in summer walks can be hot.
- 02At the beach, check whether sun loungers and umbrellas come at an extra charge or are tied to a consumption minimum.
- 03To visit archaeological sites and villages in the Peloponnese, check opening hours and consider renting a car.
- 04Taste the Kalamata olives and, if you buy them as souvenirs, check the rules on liquids and food for your trip.
Wake up in the right place.
