How to get around
The train is a convenient way to reach Buzău from Bucharest and other cities in Romania; check schedules and connections before you leave. In the city center, it’s easy to get around on foot, while for longer distances there are city buses and taxis available. For sights in the surrounding area, such as the Mud Volcanoes of Berca, it’s more practical to have a car or book an excursion. If you take a taxi, check the fare or use an app, when available.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are the most pleasant times to visit the city and take trips in the surrounding area, thanks to the generally mild temperatures. Summer can be hot, while in winter the days are cold and there may be snowfall. To visit outdoor attractions, check the weather conditions and any seasonal opening hours.
Where to eat
To sample Romanian cuisine, look for traditional restaurants and spots frequented by locals: typical dishes include sarmale, mici, and soups such as ciorbă, followed perhaps by papanași. Also try the covrigi of Buzău, a local specialty, and accompany your meal with a wine from the Dealu Mare region nearby.
