Getting around
Bregenz’s center is compact and easy to explore on foot, from the lakeside promenade to the upper town. To get around more quickly, the city buses connect the station, the neighborhoods, and the main attractions. The railway station is convenient for reaching other places in Vorarlberg and nearby towns such as Lindau. In summer, boats on Lake Constance offer scenic connections, but schedules and frequencies vary by season. To go up the , you can use the cable car, checking its opening hours in advance.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are ideal for strolling along the lakeside and going on hikes with generally mild temperatures. Summer is lively and coincides with the Bregenzer Festspiele, the opera festival held between July and August: for performances, it is advisable to book well in advance. In winter, the atmosphere is quieter and the weather can be cold, with possible snowfall in the surrounding area. In every season, bring a waterproof layer with you: weather on the lake can change quickly.
Where to eat
To sample the local cuisine, look for Vorarlberg dishes such as Käsknöpfle, cheese dumplings often served with onions, and Riebel, a traditional corn-based dish. In the restaurants on the lake and in the center, you’ll also find fish from Lake Constance and Austrian and international options. Markets and casual spots are a good opportunity to try regional products without planning a long meal. In high season, especially during the festival, it’s wise to reserve dinner.
