BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

Getting around

Barcelona’s city center is easy to explore on foot, but for longer distances the metro, bus, and tram network is efficient. Choose a ticket or pass based on the length of your stay and the trips you plan to take, checking updated fares and conditions on official channels. Validate your travel ticket at the entrance and keep it with you for the whole ride. To get to the airport, check which option is most convenient for your destination, as different connections may have different fares. On crowded transport and in tourist areas, keep bags and valuables under control.

When to go

Spring and early autumn are often the most pleasant times to visit Barcelona, thanks to mild temperatures and days that are perfect for strolling. Summer is lively, but it can be hot and very crowded: book ahead and plan outdoor visits for the coolest hours. In winter the weather is generally cooler and the city tends to be less congested, although some days can be rainy.

Where to eat

To sample Catalan cuisine, look for neighborhood restaurants and ask about the daily specials, as well as classics such as pa amb tomàquet, escalivada, and crema catalana. La Boqueria is a famous stop, but for a more relaxed meal it’s worth exploring the markets and taverns in neighborhoods like Gràcia and Sant Antoni. Meal times are often later than in Italy; for popular places, especially in the evening and on weekends, it’s advisable to book ahead.

Quick tips

  1. Book the most popular attractions in advance and always check opening hours on the official websites.
  2. Wear comfortable shoes: many visits are on foot and some streets are uphill or paved.
  3. Keep an eye on bags and phones in crowded areas, on public transport, and near the main attractions.
  4. Check your bill at the restaurant and ask for clarification on any cover charges or extra fees before ordering.
