Arta Bridge

The stone bridge over the Arachthos River is the symbol of the city and is linked to a famous folk legend. Its arches, especially striking at sunset, are among the most recognizable images of Epirus.

Church of Panagia Parigoritissa

This imposing 13th-century Byzantine church stands out for its dome supported by an unusual architectural structure and for the mosaics and frescoes preserved inside. It is one of the city’s main medieval monuments.

Arta Castle

The medieval fortress rises on a hill in the historic center and preserves walls and towers that bear witness to the city’s strategic past. Its inner space is now also used for cultural events.

Church of Saint Theodora

Dedicated to the patron saint of Arta, this Byzantine church offers an intimate atmosphere and precious artistic treasures. The complex is tied to the story of Queen Theodora, who founded a monastery here in the 13th century.

Arta Archaeological Museum

The museum displays finds that illustrate the history of the region from antiquity to the Roman era, with particular attention to Ambracia. It is a useful stop for putting the scattered archaeological remains around the city into context.

Small Theatre of Ambracia

The remains of this ancient theater bring the city of Ambracia back to life, an important center of ancient Greece. Although partly absorbed into the urban fabric, the site still allows visitors to पहचान the structure of the auditorium and imagine performances from long ago.

BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

Getting around

The center of Arta can be comfortably explored on foot, with short distances between the main sights. To reach nearby towns and sites, a car offers greater freedom; alternatively, check the regional buses, as frequencies and connections can vary. If you arrive by bus, check the return schedule in advance. In summer, bring water and sun protection, especially for walks during the hottest part of the day.

When to go

Spring and autumn are generally the most pleasant times to explore Arta and the Epirus region, thanks to milder temperatures. Summer can be hot, while winter is often rainier: if you travel during this season, bring waterproof clothing and check the forecast. To visit the surrounding area at a relaxed pace, consider weekdays too, when some attractions and activities may be less crowded.

Where to eat

To sample the local cuisine, look for taverns and restaurants in the center serving specialties from Epirus, such as savory pies filled with cheese or vegetables, grilled meats, and home-style dishes. Menus may also feature local products, including citrus fruits and olives. Ask what the daily specials are and check opening hours in advance, as they can change depending on the season.

Quick tips

  1. Wear comfortable shoes: the center is easy to explore on foot.
  2. During the warmer months, plan outdoor visits for the morning or late afternoon.
  3. Check regional bus schedules in advance if you are not traveling by car.
  4. Ask locals which specialties and regional products are available that day.
