Argos - MykinesPeloponnese · Greece
One destination.
A thousand ways to live it.
Argos and Mycenae bring together some of the most fascinating chapters of Greek history, from the ancient city considered one of the oldest in Europe to the legendary Mycenaean citadel. Among theaters, monumental tombs, and cyclopean walls, Argolis offers an evocative journey through archaeology and Mediterranean landscapes.
Worth seeing, worth remembering.
This is the monumental entrance to the citadel of Mycenae and one of the most famous symbols of Greek archaeology. The relief of the two lions above the lintel dates back to the 2nd millennium BC.
This imposing tholos tomb stands out for its domed chamber and grand entrance doorway. It is also known as the Tomb of Agamemnon, although the attribution is not certain.
The galleries tell the story of the citadel through finds unearthed in the area, pottery, and everyday objects. A useful visit to better understand what you see among the ruins.
Carved into the slope of a hill, the ancient theater could accommodate a large audience and preserves a remarkably striking architectural form. From here, you can also sense the deep bond between ancient Argos and its landscape.
The castle ruins occupy the summit of the hill overlooking Argos. The climb rewards you with sweeping views over the city and the Argolis plain.

How to get around
Argos and the (Mykines) are about 12 km apart: driving is the most convenient way to get between the two and explore the surroundings. Alternatively, regional buses can be used, but services and connections to the site may be limited or vary by season: check the timetables before setting off. Taxis are available in Argos and are also useful for reaching Mycenae, provided you agree on the return trip in advance. The site is explored on foot and the terrain is partly uneven, so comfortable shoes are recommended.
When to go
Spring and autumn offer more pleasant temperatures for visiting the archaeological site and strolling around the area. In summer, the heat can be intense and some areas are exposed to the sun: it is best to arrive in the morning, bring water, and check the updated opening hours. In winter, the climate is milder than in many European regions, but the days are shorter and it can rain.
Where to eat
In Argos you will find tavernas and eateries serving Greek dishes, grilled meats, salads, and specialties from the Argolid region. In the village of Mykines and around the archaeological site, the choice may be more limited and opening hours vary, especially out of season. For more options, you can stop for lunch in Argos or continue on to Nafplio. In the summer months, it is useful to check in advance that the place is open.
