BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

How to get around

Argithea is a mountainous area made up of villages far apart from one another, so a car is the most practical way to explore it. The roads are often narrow and winding: allow for longer travel times than the distance alone would suggest. Public transport connections can be limited, especially in the smaller settlements, so check timetables and availability in advance. In winter, snow and ice can make some sections difficult or temporarily impassable.

When to go

Spring and autumn are ideal for walking and visiting the villages, thanks to generally mild temperatures and scenic landscapes. Summer is suitable for high-altitude hikes, but it’s best to set off early on the hottest days. In winter, the weather can be harsh and snowfall can affect travel: check road conditions before you leave.

Where to Eat

In the villages, you’ll find taverns and small eateries serving traditional Greek cuisine, often based on mountain ingredients and local produce. On the menu, look for grilled or stewed meats, cheeses, and savory pies typical of the region. Opening hours and days may vary, especially out of season: it’s a good idea to call ahead or ask locally.

Quick tips

  1. Fill up before heading into more remote areas, and don’t assume you’ll find open gas stations along the way.
  2. Download offline maps: phone coverage can be patchy between villages and on mountain roads.
  3. Bring suitable shoes and a jacket even in summer, because the weather can change quickly at altitude.
  4. In case of bad weather or snow, ask the place where you’re staying for road updates before setting off.
