To explore Archanes and the inland villages, a car is the most practical option: distances can be considerable and public transport is not always frequent. Buses to Archanes leave from Heraklion, but it is advisable to check updated schedules and stops before setting off. To reach the more remote localities and the southern coast, consider renting a car and allow extra time on the mountain roads. In the villages, which are often compact, it is easy to get around on foot, keeping the slopes and narrow streets in mind.
Spring and autumn are the best times to visit the area: temperatures are milder and ideal for hiking, archaeological visits and stops in the villages. Summer is hot, especially inland, but it can suit those who want to combine sightseeing with a trip to the coast; it is best to plan outdoor activities for the morning or late afternoon. In winter the climate is generally cooler and some activities or facilities may have reduced hours.
In Archanes and the nearby villages, look for traditional tavernas where you can taste Cretan dishes made with local ingredients, seasonal vegetables, cheeses, olive oil and meat. The area is also closely linked to viticulture: in the wineries and restaurants you may find wines produced nearby. Toward the southern coast, opt for the village tavernas by the sea for fish and seasonal specialties. Hours may vary outside the summer months, so it is wise to check in advance.
