BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

How to get around

Aosta’s historic center is compact and easy to explore on foot: many of the main sights are close to one another. To reach the more distant neighborhoods and some places in the valley, you can use local and regional buses. If you’re arriving by train, check schedules and any replacement services on the route in advance, as service may vary. A car is useful for exploring the region, but in the historic center parking and access can be limited.

When to go

Late spring and early autumn are ideal for strolling through the city and visiting the archaeological sites in generally mild temperatures. Summer brings long days and plenty of opportunities for mountain hikes, while winter is a great choice for those who want to combine sightseeing with snow activities in nearby resorts. In any season, check the forecast and trail conditions if you’re planning high-altitude excursions.

Where to eat

To sample Valdostan cuisine, look for trattorias and restaurants serving fontina, polenta concia, carbonada, and traditional soups. In bars and wine shops you’ll also find local cured meats and wines from the region, such as Vallée d’Aoste DOC. For a more casual meal, explore the streets of the center and the area around Piazza Émile Chanoux. During peak periods, it’s advisable to book ahead, especially in the evening.

Quick tips

  1. Plan at least half a day for the historic center, including the Arch of Augustus, Porta Prætoria, and the Roman theater.
  2. Wear comfortable shoes: the center has cobblestone stretches and uneven paving.
  3. Check the latest schedules for public transport and archaeological sites before you set off.
  4. If you’re planning excursions outside the city, check the weather and bring clothing suited to changes in altitude.
