Day 1 – Anogia, music and artisan traditions

10:00–18:00 Easy walks

Discover the center of Anogia and its musical and textile traditions on foot.

10:00

Meidani Square

Set aside about 1 hour for the square and the central streets around it, taking in the village architecture and everyday life in the cafés. The stop can be reached on foot if you're staying in the center; no ticket is required, while a coffee break may cost around 2–5 €.

It's a good landmark for getting your bearings before continuing on foot.

11:15

Nikos Xylouris' House

Reach the house on foot in a few minutes from the square and allow about 1 hour to explore the connection between the famed musician and Anogia, as well as Cretan musical tradition. Access and any ticket, around 0–5 €, depend on the type of visit: check the official information before going.

If an interior visit isn't available, use the time to explore the surrounding neighborhood at a leisurely pace.

13:00

Traditional weaving workshops

Head back toward the central streets and allow 1–2 hours to watch the looms, traditional patterns, and workmanship, asking permission before photographing people or workspaces. A workshop visit may be free or arranged directly; small handcrafted items may start at around 10–20 €, with higher prices for larger or more elaborate pieces. Have lunch in the village between visits, budgeting roughly 12–25 € for a meal.

Contact the workshop in advance to arrange the time and check whether it accepts visitors.

Day 2 – Nida, Zeus's Cave and the mountains

09:00–18:30 Mountain day, with car travel and short walks

Explore the landscape of Mount Ida and spend time at Ideon Andron Cave and the observatory area.

09:00

Nida Plateau

From Anogia, reach the plateau by car along a mountain road: allow about 40–60 minutes, depending on conditions and stops, for a distance of about 20–25 km. Spend 1–1,5 hours taking in the views, the pastures, and traces of the pastoral landscape; access to the area is generally free of charge, while the cost of the car transfer depends on rental and fuel.

Bring water, a warm layer, and suitable shoes: altitude and weather can change quickly.

11:00

Ideon Andron Cave

Continue to the cave and allow about 1–1,5 hours for the approach and visit, checking trail and access conditions on site. The place is tied to mythological stories about Zeus’s birth and childhood; observe the karst landscape carefully without touching the formations. Any entrance fee may be around 0–10 €: check the official website or with the operator for up-to-date information.

Plan a packed lunch break or an organized stop before continuing to the observatory.

15:00

Skinakas Observatory

Reach the observatory by car along a mountain road, allowing for variable travel times and checking beforehand whether the route is passable. Spend about 1–2 hours in the area and enjoying the high-altitude views; access to the buildings or guided visits should not be assumed and must be arranged with the observatory. Consider 0–15 € as a rough guide for any possible visit or activity, in addition to car costs, and verify all conditions through official channels.

If you do not have confirmation of access, do not enter the facilities: limit your stop to accessible and safe areas.

Day 3 – Zoniana and Axos, cave and wooden art

09:30–16:30 Cultural visits with short drives

End the trip with two cultural stops in the villages near Anogia.

09:30

Sfendoni Cave in Zoniana

From Anogia, drive to Zoniana in about 20–30 minutes, then allow 1–1.5 hours for the visit and the surrounding area. Inside, take in the formations and shapes created by water in the limestone, following the instructions on the guided or marked route. Admission may cost roughly 5–10 €: check prices, visiting options, and availability on the official website before you go.

Wear shoes with good grip and bring a light jacket, as the cave can be cool.

12:30

Wood Sculpture Museum in Axos

Continue by car from Zoniana to Axos, a short transfer depending on the route you choose, and allow around 1–1.5 hours for the visit. Take a close look at the subjects, details, and techniques of the wooden works, which offer an interesting perspective on local craftsmanship; admission, if any, is roughly 0–8 €, to be checked with the museum.
