BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

How to get around

A car is the most practical way to explore the area, especially for getting around between Krestena, Andritsena, and the surrounding villages. The mountain roads are scenic but winding: allow for longer travel times and drive carefully. Krestena is a convenient base for reaching the coast and the archaeological site of Olympia, while Andritsena is located in the mountainous interior. Regional buses can be infrequent, so check timetables and connections in advance. In built-up areas, park in the designated spaces and continue on foot through the narrower streets.

When to go

Spring and early autumn are ideal for visiting the interior, with generally mild temperatures and green landscapes. Summer is also suitable for the coastal resorts, but it can be very hot, especially in the middle of the day. In winter the climate is cooler and wetter, and conditions in the mountains can change quickly: check the forecast before setting off.

Where to eat

In Krestena and Andritsena, look for traditional tavernas, where you’ll often find home-style Greek dishes, grilled meats, cheeses, and local produce. In smaller villages, choices may be limited and opening hours can vary depending on the season, so it’s best to ask locally. If you have specific dietary needs, ask the staff directly which ingredients are in the dishes.

Quick tips

  1. Fill up before driving through the inland roads: gas stations can be far apart.
  2. Bring comfortable shoes and a light jacket, which is also useful on summer evenings in the mountains.
  3. Check bus, museum, and archaeological site opening times in advance, as they may change with the season.
  4. Keep some cash with you: not all businesses in smaller towns accept cards.
