Day 1

Heraion and the archaeological treasures of Pythagoreio

08:30–18:30 Moderate walks, with short uphill sections

Discover the main landmarks of southeastern Samos while keeping travel to a taxi transfer and walking routes in the center.

08:30

Departure from Pythagoreio and transfer to the Heraion

Arrange a taxi from the center of Pythagoreio to the sanctuary of Hera, about 7 km away: the ride usually takes 10–15 minutes. Local buses can be infrequent, especially outside peak season, so it is useful to arrange the return trip as well. Expect roughly 10–18 € each way for a taxi, depending on the season and availability.

Set off early and check the site's opening hours the day before.

09:00

Heraion of Samos

Spend about an hour and a half at the sanctuary, an important center of worship dedicated to Hera and part of the UNESCO site linked to Pythagoreio. Take in the column bases and the remains of the great temple, imagining the scale of the ancient complex. Approximate admission: about 6–10 €; availability and rates may vary depending on the season.

Bring water and sun protection: much of the area is exposed.

10:45

Return and walk to the Tunnel of Eupalinos

Head back to Pythagoreio by taxi and make your way to the tunnel entrance, located on the slopes above the center. From the village, the walk uphill takes about 20–30 minutes and includes steep sections; alternatively, you can ask the taxi to drop you near the entrance. Allow extra time for waiting and ticket purchase.

Visits to the tunnel may be limited and are not suitable for those who suffer from claustrophobia or have mobility difficulties.

11:15

Tunnel of Eupalinos

Visit this rock-cut aqueduct from the 6th century BC, famed for the precision with which the excavations advanced from two opposite ends. The route open to visitors may be limited and requires care on narrow passages and uneven ground. Allow about 45–60 minutes and an estimated ticket price of 6–10 €.

Check access conditions, opening shifts, and age restrictions in advance.

12:30

Monastery of Panagia Spiliani

Reach the monastery with a short walk, taking the uphill climb into account, and visit the accessible areas while respecting the place of worship. The location offers views of the sea and the port of Pythagoreio; nearby is also the cave associated with the complex, whose access may depend on conditions and opening hours. Admission is generally free, but a small donation is appreciated.

Wear respectful clothing and check cave accessibility on site.

13:30

Lunch in the center of Pythagoreio

Head down toward the port and stop at a tavern in the center to taste fish, local vegetables, or traditional Greek dishes. A simple lunch can cost roughly 15–25 € per person, with drinks either excluded or included depending on your choice. After the meal, take a short break before the afternoon visits.

In high season, booking or having an early lunch can help avoid waiting.

15:00

Castle of Lykourgos Logothetis

Explore the remains of the fortification near the port, linked to the history of Samos and the 19th-century Greek uprising. Admire the tower and the preserved architectural features, then wander around the area at a leisurely pace to appreciate the relationship between the castle, the town, and the sea. The exterior visit is generally free; access to the interior spaces may not always be available.

The surfaces can be uneven: choose comfortable shoes.

16:00

Stroll through historic Pythagoreion and along the waterfront

Spend the rest of the afternoon around the port and the streets of the center, part of ancient Pythagoreion. Among boats, historic remains, and facades facing the water, the walk is a pleasant way to end the visit without any further transfers. Plan a stop for coffee or ice cream, roughly 3–7 €.

If you have time, ask in town for updated opening hours of the sites for a future visit.

Practical tips

  • Check the seasonal opening hours of the Heraion and the Tunnel of Eupalinos: some archaeological sites may close in the afternoon or change visiting times.
  • Arrange the taxi to the Heraion in advance, especially if you're traveling outside peak season or on public holidays.
  • Wear shoes with good grip and bring water: the climb to the tunnel and the monastery is exposed and partly steep.
  • When entering churches and monasteries, choose respectful clothing and follow local guidance.
