Day 1

Amyntio, wine and Lake Petron

10:00–20:30 Moderate pace, with short drives

Get to know Amyntio and discover the wine-growing and lakeside landscape that defines the area.

10:00

Walk through the center of Amyntio

Spend about an hour in the center, among shopping streets, cafés and squares, to observe the town’s daily rhythm. It’s a good chance to have breakfast or buy water and small local products before driving on.

Coffee and a simple breakfast: about 3–7 €.

11:15

Visit to Alpha Estate

Drive to the winery and join a guided tour through the production areas and tasting room. The area is especially associated with the Xinomavro grape; ask which labels and vintages are available on the day of your visit.

Book in advance: the tour and tasting can cost around 15–35 € per person.

13:15

Lunch in the Amynteo area

Head back toward the center and choose a taverna for a leisurely meal, focusing on seasonal dishes, local cheeses, and grilled preparations. Allow about an hour and a half, especially if you pair lunch with a glass of local wine.

Lunch estimate: 15–25 € per person, drinks excluded.

15:00

Scenic stop at Lake Petron

Reach the lake area in just a few minutes by car and stop at the accessible spots along the shore to take in the landscape and wetland vegetation. The afternoon light is ideal for photos; keep your distance from wildlife and respect any protected or private areas.

Visiting the lakeside environment is free; bring binoculars and shoes suited to uneven ground.

16:30

Walk and break around the lake

Spend an hour on a relaxed walk along the roads and permitted paths, without planning a loop unless you have checked the trail conditions on site. Alternatively, head back toward Amynteo for a coffee break and some rest.

Avoid going near the reeds outside the designated paths, especially during nesting season.

18:30

Return and dinner in Amynteo

Go back to town for dinner and try to choose a place with local wines, asking for recommendations on the native varieties. Keep the evening deliberately light after the winery visit and the outdoor stop.

Indicative dinner: €18–30 per person.

Day 2 – Vegoritida and wine tradition

09:30–20:00 Relaxed pace, with short transfers

Explore the landscape of Lake Vegoritida, visit a village on its shore, and delve into the local wine culture.

09:30

Departure for Lake Vegoritida

After breakfast, drive to the western shore of the lake and stop at the accessible scenic viewpoints. The basin is large and the water level can vary: treat the stop as a chance to enjoy the scenery, not as a guaranteed visit to a tourist facility.

Bring water and sun protection; services along the shore may be limited.

10:30

Lookout and landscape viewing

Spend about an hour observing the lake surface, the surrounding hills, and the riparian vegetation areas. With binoculars, you may spot water birds, but the presence of species depends on the season and the conditions of the day.

Free activity; do not leave litter and do not disturb the animals.

11:45

Stop in Agios Panteleimonas

Continue to the village overlooking the lake area and take a walk through its streets and the open views over the water. Check on site which cafés or tavernas are open, as options may be limited outside the busiest periods.

Allow about 45–60 minutes, without assuming that services are available on the shore.

13:00

Lunch with products from Western Macedonia

Have lunch in the village or head back toward Amynteo, choosing a taverna that serves home-style dishes and regional products. If you are driving, keep alcohol consumption moderate: the winery tasting is planned for later.

Indicative lunch: €15–25 per person.

15:00

Visit to Domaine Karanika

Drive to the winery for a dedicated visit focused on the vineyards and production, often associated with organic practices and sparkling wines. When booking, ask about the length of the tour, available languages, and which labels are included in the tasting.

The visit must be arranged in advance; indicative cost €15–35 per person.

17:00

Return and free time in Amynteo

Head back to base and take a break before the evening: the transfer is short, but it’s worth allowing enough time to rest after the tastings. If you prefer, take a stroll through the center or buy some local products to take home.

For wine purchases, check transport options and the shop’s opening hours.

19:00

Dinner and local wines

Round off the day with dinner in town and ask the staff to suggest a pairing with the house specialties. A bottle to share lets you sample local wines without turning dinner into yet another guided tasting.

Indicative dinner: €18–30 per person.

Day 3

Nymfaio, mountain architecture and ARCTUROS

09:00–19:00 An active but unhurried day, with about 40–50 minutes of driving each way

Discover Nymfaio’s architectural heritage and learn about the wildlife conservation work led by ARCTUROS.

09:00

Departure for Nymfaio

Leave after breakfast and drive to the village, allowing about 40–50 minutes from Amynteo depending on road conditions. The route climbs into the mountains: drive carefully and check the weather and road surface, especially in the colder months.

A car is the most practical option; public transport connections are limited and may require changes.

10:00

Walking tour of the village of Nymfaio

Explore the cobbled streets and stone houses on foot, pausing to admire the balconies, rooftops, and restored facades. The center is compact, but the paving can be uneven: wear comfortable shoes and allow about an hour for the visit.

The walk is free; avoid entering courtyards or private property.

11:15

Nikios School

Head to the historic school building, one of the village's landmarks, and take note of its architecture and its role in the community's history. Access to the interior is not guaranteed every day, so check locally before planning your visit.

Any interior visit may depend on openings, events, or ongoing activities.

12:00

Church of Agios Nikolaos, Nymfaio

Make a short stop at the church and pay attention to the architectural details and the village's intimate atmosphere. If it is open, visit the interior with respectful clothing and without taking photos where not allowed.

Entry is generally free; leave a donation only if you wish.

12:45

Lunch in Nymfaio

Choose a village taverna and treat yourself to lunch with hearty dishes suited to the mountain climate. On weekends and during busier periods, it is wise to book ahead, as there are only a few places to eat.

Indicative lunch: 18–30 € per person.

14:30

Visit to the Arcturos Bear Sanctuary

Follow local signs to the ARCTUROS facility and join the visit according to the route and available times. The experience is dedicated to learning about and protecting bears; the visit does not guarantee sightings of the animals, and access arrangements may change with the season.

Check opening hours and tickets before departure; budget roughly €5–10 per person.

16:30

Coffee and a final stroll through the village

Return to the center of Nymfaio for a coffee and one last walk through the stone streets, making the most of the afternoon light. If you find artisan shops open, check the origin of the products and shipping options for any purchases.

Coffee and pastry: about €4–8.

17:30

Return to Amynteo

Set off with enough time for the mountain drive and any short stops along the way. If you are continuing to another destination, plan fuel and timing before leaving the village.

Dinner is not included: allow about €18–30 per person if you are staying overnight in Amynteo.

Estimated budget

2-night stay in a double room, per person€70–160
Meals and drinks for 3 days€105–180
Winery visits and tastings€30–70
Admission to Arcturos, if planned€5–10
Car rental and fuel for local travel, per person in a group€45–110

Indicative estimates per person for an independent trip, with overnight stays in a double room and a shared car; they do not include travel to Greece. The currency is the euro (EUR), the local currency in Greece. Prices, opening hours and rates may vary depending on the season, the property and the services included: check directly before departure.
