3 days / 2 nights · Monasteries, villages, beaches, trekking
The itinerary follows the order of the stops from south to north and then returns along the southeastern coast, organizing the visits into three geographically coherent days. The first day is dedicated to the iconic places around Chora, the second to the two ports and the settlements of Aegiali Bay, and the third to the beaches and the shipwreck on the southern coast. A rental car offers greater flexibility, while buses can be an alternative if the seasonal schedules line up with the plan.
Day 1 · Walking · 1.8 km · 26 min · Source: Mapbox · walking
Discover the historical and spiritual heart of Amorgos without leaving Chora.
08:30
Panagia Hozoviotissa Monastery
From Chora, the monastery can be reached in about 10 minutes by car or taxi; by bus, check the available schedules and be prepared for a final walk. The visit usually takes 1–1.5 hours and lets you admire the building built into the rocky cliff and the views over the Aegean; admission may be free or require a donation, while transfer costs vary, roughly €2–5 by bus or according to taxi rates. Check the official website for any visit rules, dress code, and up-to-date information.
Bring water and wear shoes suitable for steps.
11:00
Agia Anna Beach
From the monastery, walk down toward the coast in about 15–20 minutes, following the route with steps and exposed sections; alternatively, return to the road point and reach the beach with a short transfer. Set aside about 1,5–2 hours for a swim and a stop on the rocks, taking in the shape of the coastline: the cove is small and the seabed can be uneven. Access to the beach is generally free; budget about €2–5 for the bus or the cost of a transfer, if needed.
Bring reef shoes, water, and sunscreen; natural shade is limited.
13:30
Chora of Amorgos
Reach Chora in about 10–15 minutes by car or taxi, or by the local connection if it fits your plan, and set aside 3–4 hours for the pedestrian center. Wander through whitewashed alleys, small squares, and windmills, choosing a taverna for lunch and an afternoon break; allow roughly €12–25 for a meal and no cost for strolling around the village. If you want to add visits to buildings or collections, check availability, access, and prices in advance on official channels.
Paved surfaces and uphill sections require comfortable shoes.
Exploring Katapola port and heading up to Aegiali Bay and the village of Tholaria.
09:00
Katapola Port
From the Chora area, reach Katapola in about 10–15 minutes by car or taxi; alternatively, check bus schedules and connections. Set aside 1,5–2 hours for the waterfront and the port, watching the boats, maritime activity, and nearby lanes; a walk has no cost, while the bus transfer can cost about €2–5. To continue north, allow about 40–50 minutes by car to Aegiali, with more variable times by public transport.
Do not plan tight connections with ferries: schedules and links can change.
14:00
Aegiali Bay
After the transfer from Katapola, reserve about 2 hours for the bay and its seafront, with a break for lunch or a swim if sea conditions allow. The area lets you take in the coastline and the harbor; spending time on the beach requires no ticket, while a simple meal can cost roughly €12–25. If you are traveling by bus, check the services to Tholaria and the last return trip in advance, as frequency may vary by season.
In summer, protect yourself from the sun and bring water for the walk up to the village.
17:00
Tholaria Village
From Aegiali, drive or take a taxi up to Tholaria in about 10–15 minutes; on foot, the route is uphill and takes longer, so factor in the heat and elevation gain. Allow 1.5–2 hours to explore the alleys, small squares, and panoramic viewpoints over the bay, stopping for dinner or an aperitif; walking around is free, and dinner can cost roughly €18–35 per person. For the return, check transport and taxi options before staying out until evening.
If you are staying overnight in Aegiali, arrange your return before starting your evening visit.
Finish the trip between the rocky coast of Mouros and the wreck bay, leaving time for the sea and the transfers.
09:00
Mouros Beach
Reach Mouros by car or taxi, allowing roughly 25–35 minutes from Katapola and more time if you are leaving from Aegiali; the bus may require a final walk and should be checked according to the season. Plan 2.5–3 hours for the access path, swimming, and observing the sea caves and cliffs; the descent is steep and the surface can be uneven. Access usually does not require a ticket, while transportation can cost around €2–5 by bus or according to taxi fares.
Sturdy shoes for the trail and reef shoes are useful; avoid the descent when the sea is rough.
14:00
Olympia shipwreck
From Mouros, allow about 35–45 minutes by car to the southern coast and the Liveros area, checking road conditions and any unpaved sections. Set aside 1.5–2 hours for the viewpoint and the bay, where the wreck can be seen from the coast; do not enter the structure and do not swim to it without suitable conditions and experience. The visit from land is free, while any boat excursion, if available, can cost roughly €20–40; check operators, accessibility, and up-to-date prices.
Bring water and sun protection: services in this area may be limited. Leave enough time to get back.
