Day 1 – Ancient Amphipolis and its monuments

09:00–18:00 Moderate visits, travel by car

Reconstruct the history of ancient Amphipolis by visiting the museum, archaeological site, bridge, and funerary monuments.

09:00

Archaeological Museum of Amphipolis

Set aside about 75–90 minutes for the collections, which help place the city’s foundation and its role in ancient Macedonia in context. Pay particular attention to sculptures, inscriptions, and funerary finds, which will help you better understand the visits that follow. Admission may vary roughly from €3 to €10, with possible discounts and seasonal rates.

Check the official opening hours before you go: opening times and fees may change throughout the year.

10:45

Archaeological Site of Amphipolis

In just a few minutes, reach the area of the ancient city and follow the accessible stretches among walls, urban remains, and monumental structures. Allow about 90 minutes, bring water and shoes with sturdy soles: the ground is uneven and offers little shade. Any entrance fee is generally between €3 and €10, but accessibility and visiting arrangements may vary.

If you find signs or sectors closed off, respect the barriers: some areas are subject to archaeological work.

12:30

Ancient Bridge of Amphipolis

Drive to the bridge over the Strymonas and stop for a short scenic visit of about 30–40 minutes. The site lets you appreciate the relationship between the city and the river, a decisive element for transport links and the defense of ancient Amphipolis. The stop is generally free; plan for a short walk and be careful of traffic on the nearby roads.

Do not stop on the roadway: choose a safe parking spot and follow local directions.

13:15

Lunch break in Nea Amphipoli

Head to the nearest town for about an hour’s break in a taverna or café. You can opt for simple Greek dishes, salads, grilled meat, or the day’s specialties; a casual lunch costs roughly €12–25 per person. In the low season, options may be limited, so it’s worth checking in advance which places are open.

If you’re traveling in summer, book ahead or have lunch a little earlier than peak hours.

14:45

Kasta Mound and Kasta Tomb

Drive to the mound area, east of the archaeological core, and spend about 30–45 minutes on the exterior stop and the surrounding landscape. The monumental Macedonian tomb is known for its finds and sculptures, but do not assume you can enter: access to the excavations and the monument is restricted and may not be allowed for visitors. The exterior visit is normally free; any authorized visits may have specific arrangements and costs.

Check with the local archaeological authorities before setting off: do not cross fences or construction areas.

16:15

Lion of Amphipolis

End your visit at the famous funerary lion, reachable by car from the mound and the archaeological center. Allow about 40–50 minutes to view the monumental sculpture up close and read the information panels: the monument is especially striking in the late afternoon. Parking is usually free and outdoors; bring sun protection if you visit in the hot months.

Check the light before taking photos: the low sun can enhance the sculpture, but it creates shadows on the opposite side.

Practical tips

  • A car is the most practical way to connect the museum, the ancient site, the Kasta mound and the lion; the walking distances between some stops are not well suited to the hot hours.
  • Bring water, a hat and walking shoes: much of the itinerary takes place outdoors and on uneven surfaces.
  • Check the museum and archaeological site opening hours in advance, as they may vary between the summer season, winter and public holidays.
  • Consider Kasta Tomb to be an external visit unless official access is confirmed: the excavations and the monument may be closed or open only under special arrangements.
