Alexandria is a welcoming town in the heart of the Macedonian plain, ideal for discovering some of the most fascinating chapters of Greek history on day trips. In the surrounding area, you’ll find Pella, the ancient Macedonian capital, the royal tombs of Aigai, and the historic heritage of Veria.
Worth seeing, worth remembering.
The museum displays artifacts unearthed at the site, including famous mosaics and everyday objects. The visit completes the exploration of ancient Pella, just a short distance away.
As the first capital of the Macedonian kingdom, Aigai preserves a vast archaeological complex recognized by UNESCO. Among the remains, the theater and traces of the royal palace stand out.
Built around the royal burial mounds, this underground museum protects the Macedonian tombs and the precious burial goods, also associated with Philip II. The atmospheric setting makes the visit one of the most memorable moments in the area.
Housed in a historic restored mill, the museum showcases icons, frescoes, and artifacts that illustrate the city’s long Byzantine tradition. It is an ideal stop for delving deeper into the history of Veria.

How to get around
The center of Alexandria is fairly compact and can be explored on foot. To reach the surrounding villages and archaeological sites, a car offers greater freedom. The city is served by the regional railway: check timetables and connections in advance, as they may vary. Intercity buses also link the area with other towns in Imathia and Central Macedonia. For getting around locally, check on site whether taxis are available.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are generally the most pleasant times to visit Alexandria and the hinterland of Imathia, with temperatures suited to walks and excursions in the surrounding area. Summer can be very hot, while winter is cooler and wetter. If you are traveling in the summer months, plan outdoor visits for the cooler hours and bring water.
Where to eat
In the center and along the main streets you’ll find tavernas and casual spots where you can try Greek cuisine, grilled meats, salads, and mezedes to share. For a simple meal, look for psistariés too, which specialize in grilled dishes. Menus and opening hours may change with the season: ask locals for advice and make sure the place is open, especially outside the busiest periods.
Quick tips
- 01Check the updated train and bus schedules before planning a trip out of town.
- 02In summer, bring water, a hat, and sunscreen, especially for visits during the hottest part of the day.
- 03Keep some cash with you: not every small business may accept card payments.
- 04Learn a few words of Greek, such as «efcharistó» (thank you): it’s a gesture locals appreciate.
