The order of the stops prioritizes a morning visit to Proussos Monastery and a walk in nature before heading up to the mountain villages. Discover the religious heritage and mountain villages of southern Evrytania on a circular route from Karpenisi.
07:30
Departure from Karpenisi
Have breakfast in the center and set off by car heading south toward Proussos; allow about 45–60 minutes of driving, depending on road conditions. The bends and narrow stretches make the journey slower than the distance might suggest.
Fill up in town and bring water: services are limited along the route.
08:30
Proussos Monastery
Spend about an hour exploring the monastic complex, chapels, and historic spaces carved into the rock. Entry is generally free; a small donation is optional. Respect the silence and dress code in places of worship.
Opening hours may vary and the monastery may observe a break: check before visiting.
09:45
Hike to Mavri Spilia
Reach the trail area and walk toward the cave and gorge landscape, allowing about 1–2 hours for the round trip, stops included, depending on the usable route. The ground can be uneven and slippery; access is free, but weather conditions and maintenance may restrict passage.
Wear hiking shoes and do not cross any closures or barriers.
12:00
Lunch in the village of Proussos
Stop at a village tavern to sample local dishes such as grilled meats, legumes, and cheeses. Budget roughly 12–25 € per person for a simple or full meal, with drinks either included or extra depending on the place.
In the low season, some businesses may have reduced opening hours; it’s best to check in advance.
13:45
Climb back up toward Megalo Chorio
Take the mountain road north again, allowing about an hour or more of driving to reach Megalo Chorio. Along the way, stop only at safe pull-offs: the valley views are expansive, but the road requires attention.
Avoid driving distracted just to take photos and let vehicles pass at the narrowest points.
15:00
Stroll in Megalo Chorio
Explore the village lanes, stone houses, and small squares on foot, setting aside about an hour for the visit. A coffee or dessert stop may cost roughly 3–8 €; wandering around the village has no entrance fee.
The streets are steep and partly cobbled: comfortable shoes are useful even if you’re not going trekking.
16:30
Koryschades and return to Karpenisi
Drive to Koryschades, with a stop of about 45 minutes to take in the traditional architecture and the village’s intimate atmosphere. Then continue on to Karpenisi, allowing around 20–30 minutes of driving; end the day with a walk in the center or dinner, roughly 15–30 € per person.
If you want to visit any buildings or exhibition spaces, check opening days and hours on site.
