Getting around
Xanthi’s center is easy to explore on foot, especially the historic quarter, where the streets are narrow and partly cobbled. To reach places in the surrounding area, KTEL intercity buses connect the city with other destinations in the region, but timetables can be limited. A rental car is useful for exploring the villages and landscapes of Thrace. If you arrive by train or bus, check the station’s location in advance and any connections to the center. In summer, bring water and comfortable shoes for walking.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are the most pleasant times to visit Xanthi, with temperatures ideal for strolling and hiking in the surrounding area. In summer, the heat can be intense, while winter is cooler and rainier. Xanthi’s famous Carnival brings the city to life between February and March, with dates varying each year: if you want to take part, book accommodation and transport in advance.
Where to eat
To sample the local cuisine, look for tavernas in the old town and places frequented by locals. Thracian gastronomy blends Greek traditions with Balkan and Eastern influences: try the daily specials, meze, and local sweets. Opening hours can vary, especially out of season; check ahead and consider dining later, as is customary in Greece.
