Getting around
The historic center is best explored on foot: wear comfortable shoes and keep in mind that bridges and narrow streets can make the route longer than expected. To travel along the Grand Canal or reach the islands, use the ACTV vaporettos; check routes and schedules and validate your ticket before boarding. Water taxis are faster and more convenient, but also noticeably more expensive. Cars do not circulate in Venice: if you arrive by car, leave it in the parking areas at Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto and continue on foot or by vaporetto.
When to go
Spring and autumn often offer pleasant temperatures, but they are also very busy periods: book ahead and expect queues and higher prices. Summer is hot and crowded, while in winter the city is quieter and can be cold. In case of high water, check the forecasts and the city's official guidance; the raised walkways, when in place, do not necessarily cover every area.
Where to eat
To sample Venetian cuisine, look for osterie and bacari that are also frequented by locals: you can try cicchetti, sarde in saor, baccalà mantecato and squid ink risotto. Moving away from the busiest areas around St. Mark's can help you find quieter places, but always check menus and prices before sitting down. For dinner, especially on weekends, it is advisable to book.
