Day 1 – The Lower Town and Toompea Hill

10:00–20:00 Moderate walking, with uphill stretches and stops

Discover the symbolic sights of the medieval Old Town on foot and end the day among the viewpoints of Toompea.

10:00

Enter the Old Town through Viru Gate

Start at Viru Gate, one of the most recognizable gates in the medieval wall, and walk along Viru tänav toward the heart of the Lower Town. The walk to Raekoja plats takes about 10 minutes; along the way, shops, cafés, and glimpses of the city walls’ towers alternate. Access to the gate and the streets is free.

In the morning, the streets are generally quieter and ideal for photos.

10:30

Raekoja plats and Tallinn Town Hall

Spend about an hour in the Town Hall Square, the center of city life since the Middle Ages, admiring the colorful facades and Gothic details of Tallinn Town Hall. Admission to the town hall may be seasonal or limited to certain hours: budget roughly 5–10 € if the visit is available. The square is freely accessible.

Check in advance whether the town hall is open, as hours can change throughout the year.

11:45

Walk to St Olaf's Church

Reach St Olaf's on foot in about 10–15 minutes. During the tourist season, you can visit the church for free and, with the standard 10 € tower ticket, go up to the viewing platform. In the winter months, keep this stop as an exterior visit.

Tourist visits from 1 April to 31 October, normally 10:00–18:00; last entry to the tower at 17:30. Check lunch breaks, services, and weather conditions.

13:00

Lunch in the Old Town

Stop at a tavern or café between Pikk tänav and the city center, without straying from the route. For a main course with a drink, budget around 15–25 € per person; soups and set lunch menus can be more affordable options. Allow about an hour for lunch and a short break before the climb.

Restaurants in the most touristy squares tend to be more expensive than those on side streets.

14:15

Climb to Toompea and Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

Head up toward Toompea along the cobbled streets and pedestrian passages, allowing about 15–20 minutes from the Lower Town. Visit Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, recognizable for its onion domes and richly decorated interiors; admission is usually free, but it is important to keep quiet and respect any religious services. The visit takes about 30–45 minutes.

Wear shoes with good grip: the climb can be slippery in rain or snow.

15:15

Toompea Castle and surroundings

Continue on to Toompea Castle, home to the Estonian Parliament, and view from the outside the Pikk Hermann tower and the complex’s walls. Access to the parliamentary areas is not always open and may require booking or security checks; treat the exterior visit as the main part of the stop. The surrounding area can be explored on foot without a ticket.

For any guided Parliament visits, check availability and booking details before you travel.

16:15

Kohtuotsa Viewing Platform and free time in Toompea

Reach the Kohtuotsa viewing platform in just a few minutes to admire the red rooftops, the towers of the Old Town, and, on clear days, the harbor. Then spend some time wandering the hill’s narrow streets or stopping for a coffee: a hot drink costs around 3–6 €. This stop is free and offers one of the city’s most iconic views.

Late afternoon light is often ideal for photos; the viewing platform can be crowded.

18:30

Dinner and return to the Lower Town

Head back down to the Old Town and choose a restaurant to try Estonian specialties such as fish, game, or rye bread. For a dinner with a main course and a drink, budget around 20–35 € per person, depending on the venue. After dinner, you can walk to Viru Gate in about 10–15 minutes and admire the illuminated towers.

Booking is useful on weekends and during peak season.

Practical tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes with good grip: the old town has cobblestones, hills, and uneven paving.
  • Check the seasonal opening hours of Tallinn Town Hall and St Olaf's Tower before planning your day.
  • Bring a waterproof or windproof layer: the weather can change quickly, especially near the sea.
  • When visiting churches and places of worship, check whether services are taking place and dress respectfully.
