Porto’s historic center is easy to explore on foot, but be ready for steep hills and cobblestones: comfortable shoes are essential. For longer distances, you can use the metro and buses; the metro also links the airport to the city center. The Andante card is handy for paying for public transport and must be validated before boarding. Trams and the funicular are scenic alternatives, but some lines are mainly a tourist experience.
Spring and early autumn are ideal for walking around, with generally mild temperatures and fewer crowds than in summer. From June to September, days are warmer and livelier, but it’s wise to book ahead and expect more visitors. Winter is often rainy: bring a waterproof jacket and leave room for indoor visits.
To sample the local cuisine, look for tascas and traditional restaurants: typical dishes include francesinha, bacalhau, and sardines, especially in season. In the city center and in Bolhão you’ll find plenty of options, from casual spots to more polished restaurants. For a popular dinner or on weekends, booking is recommended; if you want to try Port wine, consider a visit to the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia.
