Day 1 – The walled city, from south to north

09:00–19:30 Light walks, with cultural stops

Discover Nicosia's historic center and its diverse identities by crossing the Ledra Street checkpoint on foot.

09:00

Breakfast in the historic center

Start with breakfast in one of the cafés around Ledra Street so you can easily reach the first sights on foot. Allow around 45 minutes and budget approximately €5–10 for coffee and breakfast.

Check museum opening hours in advance: some may close on certain days of the week.

10:00

Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia

Spend about an hour and a quarter at this museum, which tells the city's story through objects, maps, and reconstructions from different eras. The visit is a great way to get your bearings before exploring the streets of the center; admission may be free or may have an indicative fee of up to €5.

Check opening hours and any seasonal closures on the official website.

11:30

Panoramic view from the Shacolas Tower

Reach the tower with a short walk and go up to the observatory to take in the walled city and the areas beyond the Green Line from above. Allow 40–50 minutes and an indicative ticket price of €2–5, subject to change.

Visibility is often better around midday.

12:30

Lunch among the streets of the city center

Stop at a taverna or a venue around Ledra Street: you can choose Cypriot dishes, meze, or a quicker lunch. For a simple meal, budget around €12–20 per person, drinks excluded or included depending on the venue.

For a full meze, ask about the quantity before ordering: the portions can be generous.

14:00

Walk along Ledra Street and cross over

Follow Ledra Street, taking in the shops and the architecture of the city center before reaching the pedestrian checkpoint. Allow 30–45 minutes for the walk and any possible checks: bring a valid ID and keep in mind that on the north side the currency commonly used is the Turkish lira, although some businesses accept euros.

Crossing conditions can change: check before you set off and follow the checkpoint instructions.

15:00

Büyük Han

After crossing, walk for about 10–15 minutes to Büyük Han, a historic caravanserai with a porticoed courtyard, shops, and cafés. Set aside about an hour for the visit and a break; a coffee or drink can cost roughly €3–8 or the equivalent in TRY.

The courtyard is a pleasant place to stop, but check the accessibility of the shops and indoor areas.

16:15

Selimiye Mosque and the surrounding area

Continue on foot toward the mosque, once a Gothic cathedral, and admire from the outside the buttresses and architectural additions from different historical periods. Allow 45–60 minutes for the visit and a stroll through the surrounding lanes; access and required clothing may depend on the rules in force and on religious activities.

If entry is permitted, remove your shoes and respect the signage; check for any work in progress.

18:00

Return and dinner in the center

Head back toward Ledra Street with a walk of about 15–20 minutes and cross the checkpoint again, leaving some time for checks. End the day in the southern part with an informal dinner: indicative budget €15–25 per person, depending on the venue and drinks.

Don't cut the margin too fine for the last crossing: check the opening hours and crossing conditions before you go.

Estimated budget

Lunch€12–20 per person
Coffee or a drink at Büyük Han€3–8 or the equivalent in TRY

Opening hours, entry fees, and costs may change; check with the venues before visiting.

Practical tips

  • Bring a valid ID and check the latest updated conditions before your visit for crossing the Ledra Street checkpoint.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: the route is concentrated in the historic center, but it includes uneven paving and several stretches on foot.
  • When visiting religious sites, choose respectful clothing and follow local guidance; access may be restricted during services.
  • Keep some euros on hand and an alternative payment method: in the northern part, prices may be quoted in TRY and some establishments do not accept cards.
