Getting around
The historic center is best explored on foot, but be ready for crowded streets, uneven cobblestones, and hills. For longer distances, you can use the metro, buses, and funiculars: Line 1 connects several central areas, while the funiculars reach the hillside neighborhoods. Check timetables and alerts before you set out, because frequencies and service can vary. Buy and validate your ticket according to the operator’s instructions; don’t rely too heavily on taxis at peak times, when traffic can be heavy.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are ideal for visiting Naples on foot, thanks to the generally mild temperatures. Summer is lively but hot and crowded, especially in seaside areas and at the busiest sights; book ahead and plan outdoor visits for the morning. In winter the climate often remains relatively mild, although rainy days are possible.
Where to eat
To taste Neapolitan pizza, look for a historic pizzeria or a neighborhood one and expect some waiting time at peak hours. In the historic center you’ll also find trattorias serving traditional dishes such as pasta e patate, ragù, and genovese; for a quick meal, try a friggitoria or a pastry shop with sfogliatelle and babà. At the most popular places, it’s a good idea to book, especially in the evening and on weekends.
Quick tips
- 01Wear comfortable shoes with non-slip soles: many streets are paved in stone and some routes are steep.
- 02Keep your wallet and phone safe in crowded areas and on public transport, without forgetting basic caution.
- 03Check opening times, any closures, and access arrangements in advance for museums and archaeological sites.
- 04To reach the hillside neighborhoods or the seafront, allow extra travel time during heavy traffic.
