Ljubljana Castle (Ljubljanski grad)

Perched on the hill overlooking the center, the castle tells the story of the city and offers sweeping views over the rooftops and the Alps on clear days. It can be reached on foot or by funicular.

Triple Bridge (Tromostovje)

Designed by architect Jože Plečnik, it brings together three pedestrian crossings linking Prešeren Square to the old town. It is one of the most recognizable views in Ljubljana.

Prešeren Square (Prešernov trg)

The lively heart of the city, it is dominated by the pink facade of the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation and the statue of the poet France Prešeren. From here, you can access the Triple Bridge directly.

Dragon Bridge (Zmajski most)

Four large copper dragons guard this Art Nouveau bridge, which has become one of Ljubljana’s symbols. The dragon is also the city’s emblem.

Ljubljana Central Market (Ljubljanska tržnica)

Between the open-air market and the arcades designed by Plečnik, it is an ideal place to get to know the flavors and everyday life of the capital. It is located near the river and the Dragon Bridge.

Tivoli Park (Park Tivoli)

The city’s main green space stretches from the center toward the hills, with paths, gardens, and shady avenues. It is perfect for a peaceful break after visiting the old town.

Getting around

Ljubljana’s center is compact and easy to explore on foot, among squares, bridges, and pedestrian riverfront paths. For longer distances, you can use the city buses: get an Urbana card or check the latest payment options on the official app. Bikes are a practical alternative, thanks in part to the BicikeLJ bike-sharing service. If you arrive by air, compare buses, shuttles, and taxis to reach the center. By car, keep in mind that traffic in the central area is restricted and parking can be expensive.

When to go

Spring and early autumn are ideal for strolling around and sightseeing, with generally mild temperatures. Summer brings long days, outdoor tables, and more visitors, while the weather can be hot and stormy. In winter it’s cold, but the lights and markets make the center especially pleasant during the holidays. In any season, bring a raincoat with you: the weather can change quickly.

Where to eat

To sample Slovenian cuisine, look for dishes such as kranjska klobasa, jota, and štruklji, often prepared in different versions depending on the place. The Central Market and its surroundings are a good choice for a snack or to discover local products, especially on market days. Along the river you’ll find restaurants and cafés, but the most sought-after tables can run out at peak times. For a weekend dinner, it’s best to book ahead.

Quick tips

Set aside a riverside walk and time to cross the bridges in the center, which are especially striking at sunset.
Go up to Ljubljana Castle on foot or by funicular; check opening times and prices before your visit.
Bring a reusable water bottle: there are public drinking fountains in the city, but make sure they are working and safe to drink from.
If you want to visit museums or take day trips in the surrounding area, check the opening hours and any closing days in advance.
