Day 1 – From the City of the Knights to Grand Harbour

09:00–20:00 Easy walks, with cultural visits

Discover the main historical treasures of Valletta by following a route concentrated in the walled center.

09:00

Entering the historic city

Enter through City Gate and walk along Republic Street toward the center, taking in the limestone facades and the regular street grid. The initial stretch is short and flat, but some side streets feature uphill sections and uneven paving. The walk is free.

If you arrive by bus, the terminal is just outside City Gate.

09:30

National Museum of Archaeology

Spend about an hour exploring the Maltese prehistoric collections, with finds from the archipelago’s megalithic temples. Among the objects worth a close look are the famous figurines and artifacts linked to the daily life of ancient communities. Admission is roughly in the €5–10 range.

Check the day’s opening hours: access to the rooms and galleries may vary.

10:45

St John's Co-Cathedral

Reach the co-cathedral with a walk of just a few minutes and allow about an hour for the visit. Inside, pause to admire the richly inlaid floor, the chapels of the different languages of the Order, and Caravaggio’s works. Entry is ticketed and may cost roughly €15–20.

It is a place of worship: dress respectfully and check in advance for any closures due to religious services.

12:15

Lunch break between Republic Street and the side streets

Stop at a trattoria or café in the city center to sample Maltese specialties such as pastizzi, ftira, or fish-based dishes. Budget around €12–25 for a simple or mid-range lunch, drinks not included. After lunch, take your time walking northeast toward the Grandmaster's Palace.

At the most popular places, it’s a good idea to book ahead or have lunch a little earlier.

13:45

Grandmaster's Palace

Visit the palace, the historic seat of the Grand Masters of the Order and now an important institutional building. If the rooms are open, pay special attention to the state rooms and decorative elements; the route you can actually visit may vary depending on official activities. Allow around 60–90 minutes and an estimated cost of €10–15.

Check before your visit which spaces are open to the public on your chosen date.

15:45

Casa Rocca Piccola

Reach this historic residence with a short walk and tour the furnished rooms to learn about the daily life of a Maltese noble family. The visit usually lasts about an hour; admission is typically in the €10–15 range. Opening times and arrangements may depend on the guided tours available.

Check the tour schedule in advance and whether booking is required.

17:00

Upper Barrakka Gardens

Head down to the southern edge of the peninsula and make your way to the gardens for a break in the shade and one of the widest views over the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities. The gardens are free. This 17:00 stop is scenic: the regular gun salutes at the Saluting Battery take place at 12:00 and 16:00 from Monday to Saturday, except during closures and events.

Arrive a little early if you want to find a spot along the panoramic balustrade.

18:30

Evening stroll and dinner in the center

Head back toward Republic Street through the inner streets and watch the facades light up as the city gradually empties. End with dinner in the center: expect around €20–40 per person, depending on the venue and your choice of dishes. To get back to the bus terminal, allow about 10–15 minutes on foot from many central areas.

If you have an evening connection, check bus times in advance and leave a buffer to reach the stop.

Practical tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes: the historic center is easy to explore on foot, but the streets can be steep and cobbled.
  • Plan this itinerary between Monday and Saturday: St John’s is closed to visitors on Sundays and public holidays, and Casa Rocca Piccola on Sundays. Also check museum notices and any institutional commitments at the palace.
  • In summer, bring water, a hat, and sunscreen: many streets and squares are exposed to the sun.
  • Book guided tours and the most popular restaurants in advance, especially on weekends and during peak season.
