Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and Piazza del Duomo

Brunelleschi’s dome towers over one of Italy’s most famous monumental complexes, alongside Giotto’s Bell Tower and the Baptistery. It’s a good idea to book in advance if you’d like to climb the dome or the bell tower.

Uffizi Gallery

A must-see museum where you can admire masterpieces by Botticelli, Leonardo, Michelangelo and other great artists. Set aside a few hours for your visit and book your ticket, especially during peak periods.

Florence’s most famous medieval bridge is known for its shops overlooking the Arno and the Vasari Corridor above. It’s especially enchanting at sunset, when the light reflects off the river.

Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens

Once the residence of the Medici family, Pitti Palace houses museums and art collections, while the vast Boboli Gardens feature avenues, fountains and views over the city. Allow at least half a day to explore both at a leisurely pace.

This panoramic terrace offers spectacular views of Florence’s rooftops, domes and bridges. You can reach it on foot via an uphill walk or by public transport; sunset is one of the most popular times to visit.

Getting around

The historic center is best explored on foot: many attractions are close together, and some streets have restricted car access. Buses and trams are available for reaching more distant areas; check routes and tickets through official public transport channels. If you’re arriving by car, bear in mind that the city center is in a limited traffic zone and parking can be expensive.

When to visit

Spring and early fall generally bring pleasant temperatures for walking and visiting museums. Summer can be very hot and crowded, while winter is often quieter but can bring rain. Book ahead for the most popular attractions, whatever the season.

Where to eat

To sample Florentine cuisine, look for trattorias and osterias in the Sant’Ambrogio and Oltrarno neighborhoods, as well as on the less-frequented streets around the center. Local specialties include ribollita, pappa al pomodoro and bistecca alla fiorentina; markets and delis are convenient alternatives for a casual meal. Check ingredients and availability, especially for seasonal dishes.

Book admission to the Uffizi, the Accademia Gallery and the Duomo dome in advance, and check availability and booking details on the official websites.
Wear comfortable shoes: the center is best explored on foot, and many streets are paved with cobblestones.
Observe the limited traffic zone and check public transport schedules before setting off.
