Axios-Loudias-Aliakmonas Delta National Park
A vast protected area of estuaries, reed beds, and floodplains, an important habitat for numerous bird species. It is one of the best places in the region to appreciate the natural richness of the Thermaic Gulf.
Gallikos River Estuary
The Gallikos reaches the gulf here through a landscape of low banks and wetlands. The mouth is an interesting stop for anyone who loves wildlife watching and delicate coastal environments.
Loudias River Estuary
The Loudias mouth area offers an open landscape of channels, fields, and marshy habitats. It is one of the most evocative areas for taking in the riverine character of the delta.
Archaeological Site of Sindos
The necropolises of ancient Sindos have yielded important finds from archaic and classical Macedonia, now mainly preserved at the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki. The site offers a glimpse into the communities that inhabited the plain in ancient times.
Port of Chalastra
A small harbor tied to the area's fishing life, set within the flat landscape near the coast. It is a pleasant stop for taking in the gulf and the area's everyday rhythm.

How to get around
Delta is located west of Thessaloniki and includes several distinct areas, so a car is convenient for getting between the settlements and reaching the wetlands. Buses connect the area with Thessaloniki and some nearby localities, but schedules and routes can vary: check updated timetables before setting out. For short trips, taxis and rental cars are practical alternatives. If you visit the delta of the Axios, Loudias and Aliakmonas rivers, find out in advance which roads are accessible and what the route conditions are like.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are ideal for exploring the area, with milder temperatures and good opportunities for birdwatching in the wetlands. In summer, the heat can be intense and mosquitoes numerous, especially near lagoons and canals: bring water, a hat and insect repellent. Winter is quieter, but the weather can be cold and damp.
Where to eat
In the local centers, such as Chalastra, look for tavernas and places popular with locals: the area is known for fishing and for produce from the lagoon regions. On the menu you may find fish, mussels and other seafood, as well as traditional Greek dishes. Availability depends on the season; ask which products are fresh that day and check opening hours, which may change outside the high season.
